Recipe: Blood Orange Margaritas (3)

Is it just me, or are blood oranges getting later and later? The first of the spring peas and asparagus are starting to appear, but the supermarket and greengrocer shelves are still heaving with the things. Since I started to cut down on the amount I drink during the week, I’ve tried to make a bit of an effort with my Friday evening drink rather than just opening another bottle of wine, which means I’ve been playing around with some new co*cktails. I’d not made a new margarita flavour since I made last Cinco de Mayo, so I thought it was about time I made a ruby red, blood orange version of my all time favourite co*cktail!

I’ve been told that my margaritas are rather strong, so feel free to cut down on the tequila a bit if you think so too. However, isn’t that half the fun of making your own drinks at home, rather than paying through the nose for each shot of spirit when you’re drinking out? On Saturday I consumed an insane amount of out-the-house co*cktails when we were all out for my best friends hen party I’d helped organise, first taking her for a drink while the others set up, then at afternoon tea and the bar afterwards and I think I’d probably have heart failure if I saw the actual volume of spirit consumed next to the afternoons bill…

Actually, rather than going out and spending a load on drinks, I think we should work harder to make an at home happy hour a thing. Choose something from my drinks section, and something from my nibbles section, then sit at home smugly with your other half or have a few friends over, safe in the knowledge that you’d made both a massive saving, and that you won’t also have to pay for that late night Uber you never planned for when heading out! Personally I think these margaritas would go brilliantly with this .

Description

A strong, fruity margarita that is a beautiful, refreshing way to enjoy the best of late winter blood oranges. Easily scaled up to make a pitcher for a crowd.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 120ml Tequila Blanco
  • 40ml Triple Sec
  • Juice of 3 Large Blood Oranges
  • Juice of 2 Limes
  • 2 Large Handfuls Ice Cubes
  • Fine Sea Salt (optional, for salted glass rims)

Instructions

  1. Combine the tequila, triple sec and citrus juice with a handful of ice in the co*cktail shaker. Shake vigorously for about a minute.
  2. If you’re rimming the glasses, shake a thin layer of salt on one plate, and pour a little triple sec on another. Dip the glass rims first in the triple sec, then the salt, making sure only to coat the outside rim of the glass.
  3. Divide the remaining ice between the two glasses, and strain over the margarita mix. Serve immediately.
